Aged Care ForumClick Here for a copy of the Aged Care Forum Flyer

November 30th 2011 6:00pm Karralyka Centre
National Seniors Australia have organised this free forum to enable you to take part in the current discussion of this vital issue.
At the end of this year the Government will present their response to the Productivity Commission's Report calling for sweeping changes to the Aged Care System; changes which will have an impact on all of us.

Australia’s aged care system is under-resourced, understaffed and struggling under the weight of demand. Government, industry and consumers all agree the aged care system needs urgent reform. The blueprint for this reform is a Productivity Commission report released in August 2011. The federal government will respond to that report at the end of the year.

A key recommendation from the report is that we use the family home to pay for care. This means that the family home - exempt in all other social security assessments - will be included in the means test. If you are deemed “able to pay” for aged care but don’t have the cash, you can either mortgage your home to the government; or sell it, buy something cheaper and put whatever’s left into a bond to finance your care. What of your children’s inheritance? What are the funding alternatives? The Productivity Commission report is big on economics but low on care.

Little is said of wages and working conditions, yet the patient experience is determined by staffing levels and the qualifications of the people who care for them. In the past five years the ratio of more qualified to less qualified staff has dropped and the ratio of residents to staff has increased. Aged care nurses are paid $300 a week less than nurses in other settings. We want less talk of efficiencies and more talk of care.

Come along, hear about the issues and have your say.  RSVP by 28th November to Margaret 03 9650 6144 or  melbourneforum@nationalseniors.com.au
